NEW ORLEANS (February 12, 2019) – Audubon Communities, an Atlanta-based firm specializing in the acquisition and management of multifamily properties across the Southeast, has completed the renovation and expansion of the retail space in the landmark American Can building in the Mid-City neighborhood.
Over the last 12 months, Audubon Communities conducted a transformational makeover improving visibility and access from Orleans Avenue. The renovation eliminated stairways with the installation of a walkway along the store fronts, allowing shoppers to more easily travel from store to store.
The project, designed by local architecture firm Eskew+Dumez+Ripple, features new signage along the top of the retail space, new plate glass windows and improved lighting, as well as the new walkways. Audubon and general contractor partner Malin Construction also added an additional 1,000 square feet of retail space to the existing retail area.
“The retail section of the property has an impressive history, originally serving as loading docks at the American Can Co. factory that operated in the historic complex from 1926 until 1988,” said Christopher Edwards, managing director of Audubon Communities. “We believe this converted and repositioned space will improve visibility and accessibility to the retail front, enhancing its standing among retailers and better serving our clients.”
Currently, the retail space is 92 percent leased and features popular local tenants, such as Revelator Coffee, Pearl Wine, Swiss Confectionery and Keesler Federal Credit Union. Jonathan Fawer and Emily Kramer with Corporate Realty, Inc., of New Orleans, handle the leasing of the retail space on behalf of ownership.
Audubon Communities acquired the American Can building in 2013. In addition to more than 22,000 square feet of retail, the property offers 268 loft-style apartments, on-site parking and an expansive array of first-class amenities.
